While translation of poetry can never truly avoid doing violence and injustice to the source material, this translation injures least.

While the actual translation of the original Old Norse poetry is superb, skillfully capturing the rhythmic meter of the ancient Skaldic poetry, the bonus features such as the engrossing, comprehensive introduction to Viking society, as well as Dr. Crawford's whimsical "Cowboy Havamal" help to bring these venerable texts to life.

As a huge fan of Norse mythology, I have read several translations of The Poetic Edda and I must say, this one is–hands down–the best translation I have read and now, one of my favorite books.While I respect some other translations, I find the ones that I have read to be often inconsistent in style, and with difficult and odd word choice, which makes the reading of those translations a bit challenging (but not in a good way).This is not the case with Crawford’s Edda. I read this book and never felt more connected to the stories of the gods and heroes. The introduction is clear and really gives a nice background to the poems, and why they were translated the way they are in the book. It also gives a nice understanding about the history, as well as the Vikings and their culture which is a huge part of the poems and their background. The language throughout is contemporary and polished, and the poems are translated and written so beautifully! The poems can easily take the reader into a world of magic and myth, heroes and sagas with such beautiful writing. Also, don’t miss out on the the excellent bonus of this book, which is the Cowboy Havamal- that on its own deserves a 5-star review.Crawford did a fantastic job finally bringing the Poetic Edda into the 21st century with this flawless translation. If you’re into Vikings/ Norse Mythology/ history or books in general: don’t miss out on this one!(btw, I bought this book as gifts to many family and friends and they all love it!)

I really enjoy this book, and have read it more than once already. Dr. Crawford is one of the world's finest scholars of Old Norse.It is not, however, a general interest book. I doubt that someone with no interest in the Norse Gods and heroes would be very interested. If you are unsure, watch a few of Dr. Jackson Crawford's Youtube videos, and you'll know whether you want this book or not.(As with salty Dutch licorice, you'll probably love it or hate it.)

Fabulous book. It holds an honored place on my shelf of Norse myths. (I would mention "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland in the same breath.) A favorite line: "Don't praise the sword till after the fight/Don't praise the ice until it's crossed/Nor the ale until you're sloshed."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these poems & immersing myself in pre-Christian stories, philosophies and mores. Mr. Crawford did a skillful job in translating these Old Norse mythologies and making it user-friendly to the masses like myself. The poems have an easy rhythm and are not bogged down with arcane language. My favorite poem was, Balder's Dreams, where Odin awakens the dead witch to interpret his sons dreams of his own death.I enjoyed the Poetic Edda immensely and look forward to other works by the author in the future.

The book has a lot of good and useful information but you have to search for it. It';s a big book covering basic recording techniques as well as ProTools operation. I wished it had been a little more precise... it took a fair amount of weeding thru the book to get the info I needed and some basic PT questions I had were not answered It's a good book if you're just getting started but cumbersome if you know a little and need to go more deeply. But it is a "for Dummies" so that's probably to be expected

This is a really good book, especially if you have little to no familiarity with Pro Tools. I am really enjoying the book and look forward to continuing through the remaining chapters. In addition to this book I purchased the three other books, Pro Tools 101 and Pro Tools Power and Pro Tools Ignite. I recommend that anyone that is really interested in learning Pro Tools, start with Pro Tools for Dummies, and then as you progress through the book, find the chapters in the Pro Tools 101 Book that are related and work through those chapters as well. After you finish Pro Tools for Dummies, go and do the entire Pro Tools 101 book again before moving on to Pro Tools Power and Pro Tools Ignite.

This book explains it all for us dummies. It goes into all aspects of the recording process and systems, which is good. but I would have preferred the book be totally focused on Pro Tools. A little dated, as we now have Pro Tools 12.3.1. Still glad I purchased this book though.

Entensive in scope. Covers all phases of the the DAW. Much more info than I thought would be covered. This book is quite large. PRO TOOLS is constantly changing and this edition gets you up to speed.

I bought this book for an Asian Humanities class. This is a textbook, and the price is horrendous even for a used copy, which is truly a shame because the price alone makes this wonderful book so very inaccessible to the average reader. Patrick S. Bresnan is a talented writer as he beautifully introduces stories and concepts behind Hinduism and Asian Buddhist traditions. His prose style is interesting and very understandable, with a subtle touch of humor where warranted, and he makes complex ideas very easy to understand and absorb. From start to finish this is a thoughtful, enjoyable and enlightening read. I had intended to sell back this book at the end of the semester, but I love it so much I now plan to keep it for myself. I wish it were more affordable so readers interested in the subject would be more likely to buy it. An earlier edition exists for slightly less money, but I don't know how it might be different from this edition, it has fewer pages. This book is highly recommended and this is one of those books that everyone should read.

Don't misunderstand: this is a good book. I did thoroughly enjoy it. However, I had to purchase it out of pocket, at full price (including taxes), and actually screamed when it arrived. Because it's not much bigger than some of the paperback fiction I own. Filled with a lot of information - great information. But I was livid - livid - that this book, wonderful as it is, is insanely overpriced. And that's why it gets 3 stars.

Bresnan does an amazing job at explaining the eastern religions and philosophies. I had to get this book for my class but I'm kind of glad I purchased it because I can see myself referencing back to it often.

i love the book, was in decent condition when i bought it. But the binding began to fall apart pretty quickly and is now basically difficult to keep together. Will find a way to restore the pages though. Absolutely love the content.

This book was used as a textbook for the online course of Eastern Religion and Philosophy. It made the course enjoyable, and is one of the few textbooks that can stand alone as an excellent study of Eastern Religions, their histories, and the various philosophies. Well written and easy to read, it is deep in details and a great 'one resource guide' to have around. In fact, I have it as a kindle book for reference that's always with me. Two points on the Kindle version; first, it uses the standard page numbers as the printed version, and second, because the text is not realizable, it is only readable on an iPad or larger device. No iPhone capacity.

We stand at the beginning of that era looking into an uncertain future. What will it look like?

Will it be a world entirely devoid of all animal life?

Leviathan is a work of speculative fiction; it takes the current trajectory of our planet to its absurd extreme. While I personally believe that total global extinction is an exceedingly unlikely scenario, at least as the direct consequence of our recklessness, the threat to our own species is far more real. Why? Because many of the plant and animals species we depend upon for food, medicine, and other uses are at terrible risk.
The earth will adapt to the changes we are causing it, of that I have no doubt. Given enough time, physical and biological systems will find a new equilibrium. As a biological scientist, I have faith that life, in some form, will find ways to occupy it.

But will humanity?

Doch welche gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse erlebten die Jugendlichen und was für Zukunftsperspektiven sahen sie selber für sich als realisitisch zu der Zeit als Punk nach Deutschland kam? Denn schwierige Situationen, mit denen die Jugendlichen zu kämpfen hatten, würde die Flucht in eine Lebensalternative leichter verständlich machen. Doch was wollten Jugendliche durch diese Lebensweise ausdrücken? Ist es eine Flucht aus der gegenwärtigen Situation, lediglich eine Protesthaltung oder die Forderung nach einer Verbesserung? About the Author

Diane Trister Dodge, founder and president of Teaching Strategies, Inc., is the author of numerous books, articles, and training materials on early childhood education. She is the lead author on all of Teaching Strategies books, including the popular The Creative Curriculum®...series. After earning a Master's degree from Bank Street College of Education, Diane earned 30 years of experience working with teachers and administrators first as a kindergarten teacher, and then as the education coordinator for a Head Start program in rural Mississippi. Her experiences in the field have taught her the value of curriculum and training materials that articulate a clear philosophy and practical approach to meaningful learning. Her belief that curriculum and assessment are intracately linked led to the development of The Creative Curriculum Developmental Continuum and The Creative Curriculum Developmental Assessment Toolkit for Ages 3-5. She has also written many books for parents including Building Your Baby's Brain, Reading Right from the Start, and A Parent's Guide to Early Childhood Education. THis is one of the best books for helping a teacher to set up a classroom. It has lists of things to place in areas of your room. It has a great lay out of interest areas. I love the way it reads like a text book, it helps to be straight forward! I really love the fact that it leans more towards a play based center. Great tools also. Such as daily lesson plans and weekly planning forms. If you are just starting out as a Early Childhood teacher or looking for some AMAZING ideas for changing your classroom this is the book you want! It will break down each area in easy to understand and follow chapters. It has helped me with room arrangement ideas! I wsa reminded of things I used to have but phased out and really needed to bring back, open art area, home like feel to the room and lots of added toys to each area.

The breakdown of this book is easy to follow and it has information about developmentally appropriate activities as well as breakdown of milestones for each age group. This book is great for preschool teachers.

Product as described.

This was a required book for my wife's ECE (Early Childhood Education) class. It is pretty easy to read and a good resource. Very heavy so watch your back.

A great preschool resource.

This curriculum book manages to cram as much information into its 530 pages as possible. It starts with an overview of child development in chapter one, entitled "How Children Deveop and Learn". Chapter one also introduces and explains what I consider the most exciting aspect of the Creative Curriculum program- the developmental continuum as a tool for tracking children's progress and identifying areas for the program to focus attention. The continuum states a program goal, let's say "knowledge of the alphabet" and then proceeds to state specific examples to help teachers assess how far a child has acheived in meeting that goal, ranging from forerunner skills (child points out that there are letters on their cubby and those letters mean this is the child's cubby) and listing 2 more examples of growing understanding, then ending with a high (for preschool) level of understanding (makes sound-letter connections and demonstrates it by writing a D on a picture they state they want to give to dad). The Creative Curriculum continuum has 50 stated goals coverng all domains of development. I find this tool extremely helpful in general program planning, individualization to meet specific needs of a specific child, and in communicating with parents.The book also has informative chapters regarding setting up the classroom environment and the family-school partnership. This book continues with a chapter on each learning center typically found in an ECE classroom such as the book corner, blocks, and water table. It states items found in that area with suggestions on how to use them and highligting what content areas (literacy, math skills, social skills, etc.)are addressed. The other thing I am also particularly pleased with this book is how it repeatedly reinforces how Early Childhood Educators assist children in furthering their understanding through teacher-child discussions,teacher modeling, and posing open questions such as "I wonder what will happen if you...?" Children are not just left to their own devises in a "safe and interesting environment." The majority of learning occurs with people interacting with each other.I even find the planning forms helpful, and I usually prefer to make up my own things like that.Overall, a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate approach to teaching small children. Highly Recommended.
