One of the CIA's first great moments of institutional reflection occurred in 1953, after American covert operatives helped overthrow Iran's left-leaning government and restored the Shah to power. The agency, then only six years old, had funded ayatollahs, mobilized the religious right and engineered a sophisticated propaganda campaign to successfully further its aims, and it wanted to know how it could reapply such tradecraft elsewhere, so it commissioned an internal report. Half a century later, the most prescient line from that report is one of caution, not optimism. "Possibilities of blowback against the United States should always be in the back of the minds of all CIA officers," the document warned. Since this first known use of the term "blowback," countless journalists and scholars have chronicled the greatest blowback of all: how the staggering quantities of aid that America provided to anti-Marxist Islamic extremists during the Cold War inadvertently positioned those very same extremists to become America's next great enemy. (Indeed, Iran's religious leaders were among the first to turn against the United States.) Dreyfuss's volume reaches farther and deeper into the subject than most. He convincingly situates America's attempt to build an Islamic bulwark against Soviet expansion into Britain's history of imperialism in the region. And where other authors restrict their focus to the Afghan mujahideen, Dreyfuss details a history of American support—sometimes conducted with startling blindness, sometimes, tacitly through proxies—for Islamic radicals in Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Syria. Drawing on archival sources and interviews with policymakers and foreign-service officials, Dreyfuss traces this ultimately misguided approach from support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt in the 1950s, the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran, the ultraorthodox Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia, and Hamas and Hezbollah to jihads in Afghanistan and Osama bin Laden. Fearful of the appeal of communism, the U.S. saw the rise of a religious Right as a counterbalance. Review is by my sister in law, who I bought this for. She says it's interesting about how the season progressed and her struggle with coming to terms with alzheimer's, trying to remember things. It is a little slow, she put it down and hasn't finished it yet. But part of it is that as she is reading it she stops and thinks of her mom when she reads it, and that's hard too.

Pat was amazing even while dealing with her illness. This book brings to light just how well she handled herself when the spotlight was on her when it wasn't about basketball. Very well written and I will treasure knowing she was classy to the very end.

Thought it would be a book I couldn't put down as the other ones I have read about her were. It was OK. Started out at a good pace, seemed to get bogged down with stats of games and such. Am 3/4 through and just can't get motivated to finish it. Miss her input. That's what's missing in this book. Just OK. I wouldn't run out to buy it new. Wait for a used one to come about. You aren't missing anything by rushing out to pay full price. Only redeeming quality is a % of the price when to her Alzheimer's. Foundation.

Gul Sharakat who has been conducting her own research by interviewing Kalasha speakers throughout Pakistan estimates there are fifteen thousand Kalasha speakers altogether. It is known that Kalasha is an old language, definitely two thousand years old and probably four thousand years old. Georg Morgenstierne says in his books that Kalasha has been spoken “for thousands of years.” Morgenstierne describes them as “among the first wave of Indo-Aryan Immigrants”. Rudyard Kipling wrote in “The Man Who Would Be King” “These women are whiter than you or me. . . . It's a mountainous country, and the women of those parts are very beautiful." These people are said to be descendants of the soldiers of Alexander the Great.

About the Author
Georg Morgenstierne was a Norwegian Linguist, one of the last of the old school of Linguists. He was associated with the University of Oslo in Norway and today there is Georg Morgenstierne's house in his honor located at Blindernveien 31, entr. From Moltke Moes vei. Morgenstierne was born in 2 January 1892 in Oslo, Norway. In 1924, he undertook the first of his two major linguistic expeditions. He arrived in Kabul with a personal letter of introduction to King Amanullah of Afghanistan from the King of Norway for permission to conduct his linguistic researches. The importance of this letter cannot be underestimated. Afghans have long been paranoid, xenophobic and suspicious of outsiders. An adventurer who undertakes to travel into the remote tribal areas of Afghanistan has virtually guaranteed himself a short life. King Amanullah had prisoners brought from the jails of Kabul to Morgenstierne so that he could interview them and learn about their languages. In this way he was able to learn about many languages spoken in Afghanistan plus he was able to learn about the Khowar Language which was spoken in Chitral on what is now the Pakistan side of the border. In 1929, Morgenstierne wished to return to Kabul to continue his research but he could not do so because by then King Amanullah had been overthrown. Therefore, Morgenstierne went to what is now the Pakistan side of the border after which he wrote another book, Report on a Linguistic Mission to North-Western India ISBN 0923891145. Morgenstierne took extensive notes and after these two visits he spent the next nearly 50 years of his life studying his notes and researching the languages he had studied there. Morgenstierne died in Oslo on 3 March 1978 with a manuscript in Khowar on his desk that he had been researching at the time of his death.
