The rediscovery of Roman law and the emergence of classical canon law around AD 1100 marked the beginnings of the civil law tradition in Europe. About the Author
Randall Lesaffer studied law as well as history at the Universities of Ghent and Leuven. He obtained his LLD at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1998. There are so many connections and interconnections, and all of them are interwoven delicately and seamlessly.Unlike some successful authors, Atwood never repeats her ideas from one book to the next but each novel is a new journey in which you're always fully immersed in the lives of the characters. Cat's Eye is no different in this respect and I was completely absorbed from start to end.I particularly liked the depiction of the child's world as one in which you observe but can't quite intervene; how this moves into the teenage years when a quiet but cruel form of revenge is exacted in a precise and self-conscious way; the relationship with the narrator's brother is drawn through perfectly concise details, with just enough information provided but never too much.This reflects another impressive feature of the novel in that there's nothing redundant in this story. Everything has a reason to be there and Atwood's skill at this level is immense. She's a brilliant writer and Cat's Eye is simply further proof of this. To say I stand in awe of her abilities and the impact her work makes on my life is a vast understatement. She is, quite simply, brilliant.

This is a book for an older person. The protagonist is around age 50 and returns to the city where she grew up for a retrospective show of her paintings, which are all about her life and the people she knew. She is now walking down the streets she walked as a child and adolescent, and all her paintings are now hanging in one room. She is also staying in the art studio of her former husband. The story is a potent emotional voyage of the past and the undigested experiences she is dealing with, as well as her own aging body. My favorite part was her experience of being bullied as a child by her “friends,” and how she finally rose above that and found her personal power. For women in particular, it can take decades before we stop giving away our power, if ever. While the two girls resume their friendship in high school, the dynamic of their childhood friendship never returns and the balance of power even shifts, over time, so that it favors Elaine.Despite Elaine's success in art and love, she has never come to terms with her relationship with Cordelia. "Cat's Eye" follows Elaine's search for Cordelia and the path that Elaine follows as she tries to understand their "friendship."Elaine herself is a dark character, as she tends to have a solemn outlook on life and never seems to display happiness. Her pensive nature leads to interesting observations on the meaning of her art and how the avant garde work resulted from her early childhood experiences. Elaine's reflections also allow the reader to follow the interactions between Elaine's parents, brother, and herself; her introduction to religion; her first experiences with art; and her experiences with the opposite sex. While this book isn't easy to read, as Atwood writes in great detail and the pace of the book moves slowly, Elaine's reflections are interesting and the way she overcomes Cordelia's evil spell leads one to believe that good can prevail over evil.

No pretender to the throne, Dr. Crawford brings to bear all the necessary historical linguistics, consummate mastery of the entire Norse corpus, and shrew literary judgement to produce a more authentic experience of the style and rhetoric of the Poetic Edda than has ever been rendered in English. While translation of poetry can never truly avoid doing violence and injustice to the source material, this translation injures least.

While the actual translation of the original Old Norse poetry is superb, skillfully capturing the rhythmic meter of the ancient Skaldic poetry, the bonus features such as the engrossing, comprehensive introduction to Viking society, as well as Dr. Crawford's whimsical "Cowboy Havamal" help to bring these venerable texts to life.

As a huge fan of Norse mythology, I have read several translations of The Poetic Edda and I must say, this one is–hands down–the best translation I have read and now, one of my favorite books.While I respect some other translations, I find the ones that I have read to be often inconsistent in style, and with difficult and odd word choice, which makes the reading of those translations a bit challenging (but not in a good way).This is not the case with Crawford’s Edda. I read this book and never felt more connected to the stories of the gods and heroes. The introduction is clear and really gives a nice background to the poems, and why they were translated the way they are in the book. It also gives a nice understanding about the history, as well as the Vikings and their culture which is a huge part of the poems and their background. The language throughout is contemporary and polished, and the poems are translated and written so beautifully! The poems can easily take the reader into a world of magic and myth, heroes and sagas with such beautiful writing. Also, don’t miss out on the the excellent bonus of this book, which is the Cowboy Havamal- that on its own deserves a 5-star review.Crawford did a fantastic job finally bringing the Poetic Edda into the 21st century with this flawless translation. If you’re into Vikings/ Norse Mythology/ history or books in general: don’t miss out on this one!(btw, I bought this book as gifts to many family and friends and they all love it!)

I really enjoy this book, and have read it more than once already. Dr. Crawford is one of the world's finest scholars of Old Norse.It is not, however, a general interest book. I doubt that someone with no interest in the Norse Gods and heroes would be very interested. If you are unsure, watch a few of Dr. Jackson Crawford's Youtube videos, and you'll know whether you want this book or not.(As with salty Dutch licorice, you'll probably love it or hate it.)

Fabulous book. It holds an honored place on my shelf of Norse myths. (I would mention "The Norse Myths" by Kevin Crossley-Holland in the same breath.) A favorite line: "Don't praise the sword till after the fight/Don't praise the ice until it's crossed/Nor the ale until you're sloshed."

I thoroughly enjoyed reading these poems & immersing myself in pre-Christian stories, philosophies and mores. Mr. Crawford did a skillful job in translating these Old Norse mythologies and making it user-friendly to the masses like myself. The poems have an easy rhythm and are not bogged down with arcane language. My favorite poem was, Balder's Dreams, where Odin awakens the dead witch to interpret his sons dreams of his own death.I enjoyed the Poetic Edda immensely and look forward to other works by the author in the future.
