Review
Nowell’s life-long love of the psalms and her scholarly work in interpreting and translating them provides grounding for understanding the Psalter’s character, structure, history, theology, and function. Readers become more aware of the bonds that connect all—humans and all nature—in community. This book will be a fine companion for any who wish to learn the psalms.Shawn Carruth, OSB, Concordia College No one knows the psalms better than Irene Nowell. She knows them under the microscope as a scholar, but more importantly she knows them as a friend with whom she has been getting together every day for years. Her anecdotes and examples light up even the cursing psalms.Abbot Jerome Kodell, Subiaco Abbey, Author of The Catholic Bible Study Handbook Irene Nowell's latest offering, Pleading, Cursing, Praising: Conversing with God through the Psalms, is an accessible invitation to regular use of the Psalms in daily life. As a Benedictine nun, this is something she practices in monastic life. But informed by her years of experience as retreat leader, teacher, and spiritual director, she believes the rest of us can bring its fruits to our own tables. . . . What might more personal use of the Psalms make of us? Nowell's guide to "conversing with God through the Psalms" welcomes that exploration Eileen Mannix, Union Presbyterian Seminary, Richmond, Virginia, Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and TheologyPleading, Cursing, Praising: Conversing with God through the Psalms is an immensely readable book which is an encouragement to anyone who seeks guidance in the use of the Psalms as a personal prayer tool. Though it is a scholarly treatment of the Psalms, this book of less than 100 pages is the most practical guide this reader has found. For those serious about understanding the Psalms and using them to enrich their prayer life, this book is an invaluable resource. Kathy Barrett-Lennard, TjurungaI loved this book. . . . It is very readable. . . . This book is perfect for those who are new to the psalms. Nowell does not presume that the reader knows anything about the psalms. She writes clearly and simply about the psalms to draw one into the topic. Consequently, someone new to lectio divino, the Liturgy of the Hours, and/or spiritual direction will find this book a valuable source. . . . Though this book is perfect for newbies, there are many things that are valuable for people who have been praying with the psalms for years. Mary McCormick, Emmanuel

Any book by Irene Nowell is worth reading, but this volume is one of her best. So many people avoid the Psalms (except perhaps Ps. 23) because they don't think they have any relevance to today's life. Northing could be further from the truth and Sr. Irene reveals the pitifalls of ignoring the Psalms. Extremely easy to read and deeply moving. I use this book with all our people in formation to become Benedictine Oblates (lay people affiliated with a Benedictine monastery). I cannot over emphasize how great this book is!!
Irene Nowell provides a compelling reflection on the Psalms. The reader is drawn into the subject early in the book. This book is perfect for people who want to learn more about the Psalms as well as for those who have the Psalms at the center of their lives - whether by practicing their singing on Sunday, or as part of their daily prayer. There is much food for thought in Irene's content and her reflection questions.A great read for individuals and for book clubs!
This is a great introduction to the Psalms, as well as a review for those who have the psalms "in their bones." I used it for a short, experiential study in a small group setting, and the guides at the end of the chapters were very helpful. Whatever Sr. Irene writes is well worth reading; this book only reinforced my previous conclusions.
Another awesome christian read.
thanks
Short book so it is very quick read. Speaks to the diversity of the Psalms. Good form critical review of Psalms.
Ordered both the electronic and paperback versions in order to have access at many times. Appreciate Irene Nowell OSB informed insight and creative way to see oneself. I have never thought of talking to God in such a way. I not stopped to do each of the Exercises at the end of the chapters but have had fun sharing the A-Z method with friends. The Prayer at the end of each chapter is so to the point and refreshing - almost as though she knew what my heart wanted to say!
For me, as a serious (lay) student of the Psalms Sister Irene has been a heroine for quite a few years. This little book is a big thing and will not disappoint anyone, whether competent scholar or curious lay person. I doubt anyone else could have brought so much depth and context to the subject of the Psalms as she has tucked into this little volume. Anyone familiar with her several works on the Old Testament and the Psalms will read between the lines that she was, indeed, called to create this volume. It is a perfect sequel to her many other works. If you want to know why it is a good thing to study and pray the psalms, READ THIS BOOK! If you are one of her many many students, this book is your cue to thank her again.Dan Drew, M.D. Indianapolis
