Irene Nowell, OSB, is a Benedictine of Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas, where she has lived for almost sixty years. An accomplished theologian and biblical scholar, Nowell is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association and the author of Numbers (of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary); Sing a New Song: The Psalms in the Sunday Lectionary; Women in the Old Testament; and Pleading, Cursing, Praising; all published by Liturgical Press. She is also a member of the editorial board of Give Us This Day (Liturgical Press).

Any book by Irene Nowell is worth reading, but this volume is one of her best. So many people avoid the Psalms (except perhaps Ps. 23) because they don't think they have any relevance to today's life. Northing could be further from the truth and Sr. Irene reveals the pitifalls of ignoring the Psalms. Extremely easy to read and deeply moving. I use this book with all our people in formation to become Benedictine Oblates (lay people affiliated with a Benedictine monastery). I cannot over emphasize how great this book is!!

Irene Nowell provides a compelling reflection on the Psalms.The reader is drawn into the subject early in the book.This book is perfect for people who want to learn more about the Psalms as well as for those who have the Psalms at the center of their lives - whether by practicing their singing on Sunday, or as part of their daily prayer.There is much food for thought in Irene's content and her reflection questions.A great read for individuals and for book clubs!

This is a great introduction to the Psalms, as well as a review for those who have the psalms "in their bones." I used it for a short, experiential study in a small group setting, and the guides at the end of the chapters were very helpful. Whatever Sr. Irene writes is well worth reading; this book only reinforced my previous conclusions.

Short book so it is very quick read. Speaks to the diversity of the Psalms. Good form critical review of Psalms.

Ordered both the electronic and paperback versions in order to have access at many times. Appreciate Irene Nowell OSB informed insight and creative way to see oneself. I have never thought of talking to God in such a way. I not stopped to do each of the Exercises at the end of the chapters but have had fun sharing the A-Z method with friends. The Prayer at the end of each chapter is so to the point and refreshing - almost as though she knew what my heart wanted to say!

For me, as a serious (lay) student of the Psalms Sister Irene has been a heroine for quite a few years. This little book is a big thing and will not disappoint anyone, whether competent scholar or curious lay person. I doubt anyone else could have brought so much depth and context to the subject of the Psalms as she has tucked into this little volume. Anyone familiar with her several works on the Old Testament and the Psalms will read between the lines that she was, indeed, called to create this volume. It is a perfect sequel to her many other works. If you want to know why it is a good thing to study and pray the psalms, READ THIS BOOK! About the Author
Alan Bryman is Professor of Organizational and Social Research, School of Management, University of Leicester, UK.

Emma Bell is Professor of Management and Organisation Studies and Head of the Centre for Economics and Management at Keele Management School. Her research is framed by a desire to understand cultures and belief systems in organizations. She has also studied business improvement initiatives and organizational change. Emma was a member of the British Academy of Management Council, and is current Co-Chair of the US Academy of Management Critical Management Studies Division. Her early working life included a period as a graduate trainee in the UK National Health Service. Emma s PhD was an ethnographic study of payment systems and organizational time in the chemical industry. She has always been interested in methods and methodologies of management research and the ways in which management knowledge is created. Recently, Emma has been involved in a number of projects related to visual analysis of organizations and management. She is a founding member of InVisio - the International Network of Visual Studies in Organizations, and worked on an ESRC Researcher Development Initiative to promote the development of visual analysis in management research.
